Mahindra to launch affordable electric SUV

Car manufacturer Mahindra has been on a roller-coaster ride with its electric vehicle dreams ever since it acquired the electric car company Reva said a report in the Times of India. The home-grown manufacturer has since then introduced two electric cars in the country, the e2o hatchback and the e-Verito . And, not to forget, the company is also competing in Formula E race. Now, it also been reported that the manufacturer is planning to produce an all-electric SUV by 2020 said a report in the Times of India. 

The car is expected to be a compact SUV and, according to people familiar with the matter, it has been codenamed as "S107" by Mahindra. Moreover, in a meeting, Anand Mahindra, chairman of Mahindra & Mahindra reportedly said, "If anyone is preparing feverishly for a disruptive future of mobility, it is Mahindra."

The company also believes that the e-Verito caters to the needs of more practical buyers, while a compact SUV will target the ones looking for a special driving experience.

Further, Mahindra & Mahindra's CEO, Pravin Shah has said, "We fully intend to be profitable participants in this new world." Which essentially means that the company wants to produce cost effective electric cars in the future."

"We are looking at adding more SUVs as well as small commercial vehicle to our electric vehicle portfolio. The focus will be on offering more affordable electric vehicles for higher accessibility. Mahindra Reva will continue to address the range with continuous development," Shah added.

Along with Mahindra, many other manufacturer have previously expressed their will to adopt hybrid technology. These include Maruti, which has introduced the mild hybrid technology in its several cars. Moreover, Mahindra, Tata and Maruti have also tied up in the past to develop electric-hybrid car parts. On the other hand, Ford is also said to be exploring the possibility of a hybrid-electric EcoSport.
