Jaitley refuses to recuse himself from Panama probe

Rejecting the demands of the Congress that he should recuse himself of the Panama Papers probe, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday said that the Congress “will not have many reasons to celebrate” after the details of expose come out.

“There is a very impartial probe going on and it is a multi-agency probe. When the details of the probe come out, the Congress will not have many reasons to celebrate,” the Union Finance Minister told journalists here.

Seeking a Supreme Court-monitored probe, the Congress has demanded that Mr. Jaitley recuse himself in order to ensure a free and fair investigation.

Asked how he would maintain impartiality in the probe, Mr. Jaitley said, “I am not able to understand their [Congress] argument.”
