On Monday, Tenev stated in an interview with the Bankless that the notion of speculative trading taking over financial markets is exaggerated when asked about the emergence of "entertainment finance."

He claimed that while passive portfolios and retirement savings accounts account for a sizable amount of activity on Robinhood's platform, they hardly ever spark viral conversations on social media. He said, “I have a hot take on this. I actually don’t believe in the thesis that entertainment is driving a huge chunk of financial activity.”

Robinhood (HOOD) was up over 1% in the last 24 hours. On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around HOOD remained in ‘neutral’ territory, with chatter levels at ‘low’ over the past day.

Gen Z Are Long-Term Investors

Tenev said that about 40% of Robinhood's assets are in passive vehicles, such as retirement accounts, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and cash positions. He claimed that many users are focusing on long-term investing strategies rather than short-term speculation.

Tenev contended that social media attention frequently gives the impression that speculative bets or meme trading dominate markets, even though a sizable portion of users are discreetly creating diversified portfolios. "There's a big logical fallacy," Tenev stated, pointing out that people frequently believe that the most popular topics on the internet must also be the most significant market activity.

Additionally, Tenev disagreed with the notion that younger investors generally engage in careless financial behavior. Rather, he claimed that Gen Z investors are becoming more conscious of long-term investing and are opening retirement accounts earlier than any other generation, with the average age of first account opening around 19. “Gen Zs are the most retirement-savvy and long-term investment-savvy generation we’ve ever had,” said Tenev.

Robinhood’s Expansion

In March last year, Robinhood entered the prediction markets by partnering with Kalshi to create a hub within its app that allows users to trade event contracts on outcomes in sports, politics, and economics.

Last week, Robinhood established the Robinhood Ventures Fund I (RVI) to enable retail investors to invest in high-growth private companies that are typically accessible only to wealthy investors or venture capital firms, with many investors anticipating investments in companies such as SpaceX and OpenAI.
