Eighteen-year-old Ashwini from Bhosga village of Kalaburgi district managed to spread false news about being eaten by a crocodile to elope with her lover.

She did so with the help of her friend Channamma, who was the first and only person to have witnessed the incident. The plan was to go to the Bheema river along with Channamma under the pretext of washing clothes and elope with her lover. She instructed Channamma to spread the news about her being eaten by a crocodile in the river.

The news about Ashwini being eaten spread like wildfire across the village and immediately the Forest Department officials began the search operation. However, even after eight hours of search neither the corpse nor the crocodile was seen.

Meanwhile, Ashwini’s parents filed a missing complaint at the Nalogi police station. The police began questioning Channamma, the first witness of the incident. However, Channamma started blurting out contradictory statements. On doubting her story, Channamma was further interrogated severely until she revealed the real matter to the police.

Ashwini’s parents had already found her a suitor and she is believed to have eloped with her lover in order to avoid the marriage.
