There’s a difference between being irreplaceable and indispensable. The job market is a temperamental one, so even if you are a fantastic performer, chances are you still may not be able to hold on to your job despite the circumstances.
 

However, job security or not, as an employee, it’s your prerogative to make things smoother and easier, and ultimately make your boss look good.  Also, being indispensable is part of the perception game. But perceptions fade, so here’s your chance to be the person who walks the walk and talks the talk.

Here are 5 ways to become indispensable:

Take initiative: Go above and beyond what is required of your job description. Take on projects on your steam, or present an idea with a plan to execute it. By doing so, will only demonstrate to your immediate boss that you are reliable and responsible.
 

Be a team player: If you want to stand out, you need to show what you have got by impressing your co-workers, too. Become the person who they turn to if they encounter a problem and not someone who runs for the hills when their co-worker approaches them for help.

Stay relevant: Keep abreast of the latest tools and technologies that can help you with your work. Also, learn to share that said information with colleagues instead of keeping it to yourself.
