Meet Amy, Pakistan's first robot waitress who serves pizza

In Pakistan's Multan, a small pizza joint called pizza.com has become famous for reasons other than its food. Diners frequent this place not for its flavourful pan pizzas but for its delightful waitress, Amy. She is the country's first robotic waitress and ever since she got introduced to the public, the restaurant has been raking in profits. 

The owner of the restaurant is grateful to his son, Usama Aziz for this. The robotic waitress is after all an invention of his 23-year-old son who studied engineering and created robots as part of his semester project. Later, he got the idea to develop a robotic waitress after he heard about this trend in China and Japan.

Amy is an affable robot who serves pizza promptly, indulges her fans by posing for selfies with them and even greets customers with a delightful message, "Hi, I'm Amy. I'm looking forward to meeting a male robot soon. HAHA." This message, delivered by a robot dressed in a long gown and an apron, invariably makes customers laugh. Aziz said he draped a scarf over her neck so as to not offend conservative customers. 

While revealing more details about Amy, Aziz said the robot is made with fibreglass and locally sources electronic components. Even during a busy day, Amy knows which table to serve dishes to. However, this wasn't always the case.

Earlier, the restaurant owners struggled to make the robot go to the right table. They also realised that Amy struggled to lift 5 kgs of food. Nevertheless, these problems were resolved soon enough.

Aziz and his dad hope to introduce new outlets in Multan and introduce three new waitresses. Aziz told Washington Post, "I used to sell pizzas, but now restaurant owners want to buy robots from me."
