While there lies a huge threat to all of the human civilisation in the Game of Thrones universe just north of the wall, there’s a power struggle within the kingdom that has everyone’s focus at the moment. Cersei Lannister sits on the Iron Throne but Daenerys Targaryen is convinced that her claim to the throne is the only true one. While season 3 began with Daenerys having the upper hand, Cersei has quickly shifted that balance in her favour with a few master strokes. Cersei’s actions not only display her tactical prowess but also her will to do anything to win – something that Daenerys lacks. While the mother of dragons didn’t ambush Westeros while she had the advantage just to avoid killing innocent people, Cersei has never hesitated to take steps that would reinforce her strengths.
In episode #3 of season 7, ‘The Queens Justice’, Cersei’s will to do anything to win continues to grow. It’s starting to grow a bit out of control, even by Lannister standards. Still, her determination to win and kill everyone who has crossed her seems to be working for her at the moment. She’s managed to outsmart Daenerys and Tyrion repeatedly, resulting in Daenerys losing a majority of her allies. Cersei may be surrounded by people who hate her but she now has the Iron Bank of Braavos behind her, having paid her debts like a true Lannister. She even has a secret weapon to combat the Dragons and dominates over the seas of the seven kingdoms. While things have taken a turn for the better for Queen Cersei, her own tenacity and ruthlessness could quite possibly lead to her own downfall in the longer run.
The one person who is closer to her than anyone else, her twin brother, Jaimie is beggining to lose faith in her. While Jaimie is a Lannister, he still has somewhat of a conscience. Cersei Lannister has upped the ante for craziness and brutality in recent times. After blowing up the Sept in a manner that would make Aerys Targaryen proud, causing the suicide of her son, and revealing her incestuous relationship with Jaimie to her servants, Cersei seems to have become increasingly drunk on power.
It was Jaimie Lannister who killed the Mad King, Aerys Targaryen. With Cersei going down a similar murderous and erratic route as the Mad King, Jaimie is beginning to see his sister for what she really is. While he may be the one who is protecting her and commanding her armies, there is no guarantee of how long his love for his sister will continue to blind him.
