India is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, but over the years, animals have been increasingly endangered, and if measures aren’t taken, there will be none left for the future generations, and that is scary thought.

While conservation measures are being done, it still faces many an obstacle.

Here is a list of India’s endangered animals, according to WWF.

The Bengal Tiger:

The national animals of India, there are roughly 2,500 found in the wild. They are usually found at mangrove, deciduous and temperate forests. These tigers can be found at Ranthambore National Park, Jim Corbett National Park and Sundarbans National Park to name a few.

Snow Leopard:

These elusive creatures can be most commonly-found in the Himalayan mountainous range of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim. There are roughly 500 out there.  They are often killed for their meat and fur, and are “listed on Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES), which makes trading of animal body parts illegal in signatory countries.”

Asian Elephant:

These gentle giants can be found anywhere in India. Due to human-nature conflict and poaching, their numbers are fast dwindling.  They are approximately 26,000 left in the wild.

Indian Rhino:

Commonly found at Assam and at the Indo-Nepal border, these one-horned rhinoceros can be spotted at grasslands and Himalayan foothills. These animals are poached for their horns that are sold at exorbitant prices. As a result, there are merely around 2500 left as estimated by WWF.

The World Wildlife theme for 2017 is “Listen to young voices”.
