When Fatima Sana Shaikh essayed the role of Geeta Phogat in the film Dangal, she received praise from everyone. Her grit and determination was hailed by all, she was pointed out as an example of women empowerment, at least her role was.

Like every 25-year-old who loves to post pictures of herself on instagram. The actress posted some pictures of hers in a black one piece swimsuit. She was posing for a magazine  shoot and for all intents and purposes looked an absolute beauty.

However, some ‘intelligent’ people became worried about the ‘sacrilege’ ‘blasphemy’ the actress was committing during the period of Ramzan.

Needless to say, once the words religion and Ramzan were brought in it had to become a communal debate being played out on the instagram and social network comment columns.

Interesting philosophy of these so-called religious guardians. During Ramzan they are abusing, trolling and slut shaming a woman, during the holy month they are using abusive language with other commenters. Under the garb of religion some people are justifying their small mentality.

There is absolutely no sense in pointing towards one religion alone. While some were criticising the actress through the eyes of religion, others chose to say that using these ‘semi-naked' pictures she was advancing her career. Absolutely, horrid thing to say to a woman. And there was no one particular religion involved in making a mockery of a woman’s body or her work.

I wonder why, any woman, Muslim non-Muslim, if she wears a bikini, why is she labelled as a slut? At a beach side what are you supposed to wear?  A three-piece dress, perhaps? Fatima Sana Shaikh was posing for a magazine shoot which required her to wear the appropriate attire. And sorry naysayers but these are some of the most tastefully shot bikini pictures.

Another interesting fact, actors like Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, or any other can wear shorts, dance bare chested or dance with women half their age during this period and it is not an affront to the religion? Shouldn't there be some equality? Most of Salman’s films that release during Eid have nothing to do with his religious affiliations and yet he is considered a great, pious ‘bhai’, while Fatima is being taunted, shamed and mocked because she also chose to honour her professional commitments.

It's not surprising that you will find women also in equal numbers deriding a member of their own sex. Some even fat-shamed her other women sermonised her on her choice of attire. The posts are raking up comments by the hour. So women or men, Muslim or non-Muslim, when we use 'the freedom of speech' trope too often it comes back to bite us. Religion or no religion, any woman does not deserve your scorn just for wearing what she chooses. Why are there so many double-standards? After Ramzan these pictures will be digestable and during it ...?

This is not women's empowerment or equality, all we are asking for is decent humans beings first.
