Its monsoon time and if there’s a dish that people in India consume when the rain pours, it’s a bowl of steaming hot Maggi. Almost everyone in our country has grown up relishing the flavours of this beautiful invention and its mostly because the tastemaker is delicious.

However, did you know that the ingredients that go into making masala aren’t healthy? It’s high in sodium and it contains MSG which can leave an adverse impact on your body. Thankfully, you can make the masala at your own home and reduce its harmful effects. We have found three different ways of preparing this flavoursome powder and here’s how you can do it.

The 15 ingredient method

If you want a flavour that closely resembles the tastemaker packet, then this 15 ingredient recipe is for you. All you need to do is include onion, ginger, garlic, coriander powders, add sugar, chilli flakes and other ingredients and give it a whirl in the blender.

Go the natural way

This recipe for making the Maggi masala is a bit unconventional but it’s very healthy. Use whole spices instead of powdered versions of it. You will need to grind 2 tsp coriander seeds, cumin seeds and kasoori methi. To this, add 6 cloves, 1 ½ tsp red chilli powder, 3 tsp garlic powder and ½ tsp nutmeg powder.

Fancy yourself some French bullion?

In the culinary world, the tastemaker is called bullion. Simply put, it’s a hardened cube that has all the flavours of a tastemaker. To make this, you should add coconut fat or oil to a pot, add chopped onions or mushrooms, then fill it potatoes and pour in some water and let it boil with salt, pepper and some herbs. If you want non-vegetarian bullion, then add chicken fat. After the mixture is boiled, freeze it and use it when its hardened.
