Chairman of Kannada Development Authority Prof S G Siddaramaiah cracked the whip on Tourism Department officials for the gross neglect of Kannada language and culture at the department.  He expressed shock asking if it is the tourism department of the State or some foreign country.  Some of the issues he pointed out included a website inactive for the past 2 years, preference to non-Kannada people for outsourcing contracts, predominantly encouragement to cultures of other States and foreign, absolute absence of Kannada culture etc. He also said it was unfortunate that instead of promoting the rich heritage and culture of the State, the Tourism Department was totally promoting north Indian culture and pop, reported Kannada Prabha.

The Tourism Department website is linked with 3 other department sites like KSTDC, JLR and it is totally confusing.  The websites are contracted to non-Kannadigas to manage and hence Kannada language and culture is absent. He gave instructions to the department to set right these irregularities within next 10 days.

The tourism department is filled with vision group politicians, industrialists and entrepreneurs and not a single representative from the culture sector.  Hence the cultural Karnataka is being lost globally, he said.

Prof Siddaramaiah visited the Public Works Department where he was again shocked to see only English and Hindi being implemented. Kannada is not used even as a choice.  From 14 years the PWD is using only English in administration. A letter to that effect was written by a citizen to the KDA and hence he visited the department. Website, tenders, advertising, rate cards and every single document is in English only.

The Director of Tourism Department Manjula and PWD In charge Chief Secretary Lakshminarayan assured the KDA that the department would implement Kannada effectively within the next 3 to 4 months.
