Zubair Ansari, 31, was arrested for stabbing two security guards in Mumbai after questioning their religion. The investigation has expanded beyond a local assault to probe possible self-radicalization and extremist influences. Authorities are examining his overseas connections, including time spent in the US, and his digital footprint.
Zubair Ansari, the 31-year-old man arrested for the brutal stabbing of two security guards in Mumbai’s Mira Road area, has become the focus of a widening investigation as authorities examine his personal history, overseas connections and possible extremist influences. What initially appeared to be a violent local assault is now being treated as a far more serious case after investigators uncovered details about his background and family ties in the United States.

According to investigators, Ansari allegedly attacked two guards at an under-construction site in the Naya Nagar area during the early hours of the morning. Police said he first asked the men about their religion and reportedly demanded that they recite the kalma before launching the assault with a knife. One victim suffered serious injuries while the other survived with minor wounds. The incident shocked residents and immediately raised concerns about a possible ideological motive behind the attack.
Authorities say Ansari had spent several years in the United States, where members of his immediate family are believed to still reside. Investigators are now examining whether his time abroad or his contacts outside India may have influenced his behaviour. Maharashtra officials confirmed that central agencies are reviewing his digital footprint, travel history and communication records to determine whether he acted alone or had wider connections.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described the case as one of possible self-radicalisation, suggesting Ansari may have been influenced by extremist content online. Officials reportedly recovered handwritten notes and digital material referencing jihadist ideology from his residence. Investigators are probing whether the attack was intended as a “lone wolf” act inspired by online propaganda rather than directed by an organised terror network.

Further reports indicate Ansari had been living alone in Mira Road after his wife reportedly left for the US. Police believe his isolation may be an important part of understanding his mental state in the weeks leading up to the attack. Anti-Terrorism Squad officers are also investigating whether any personal, ideological or psychological factors contributed to what now appears to be a targeted assault.
Security footage from the scene has become crucial evidence in the case. The video reportedly shows Ansari confronting the guards before repeatedly attacking them. Investigators say the footage supports witness claims that the assault was deliberate rather than spontaneous.
For now, one question remains central to the investigation: who exactly is Zubair Ansari? To police, he is no longer just the accused in a stabbing case, but a man whose background, overseas links and possible radicalisation may reveal whether the Mira Road attack was an isolated act — or a warning sign of something larger.
