They managed to stop Nafees from ending his life and immediately informed the police.

Both Najma and Nafees were taken to the district hospital in Sambhal for treatment. However, Najma could not survive the injuries caused by the attack.

Couple had been living separately

Police said the couple had been married for about 15 years. They had four children. For the past few years, they had been living in Sarayateen town under the Hayatnagar Police Station area.

However, Najma had moved out of the family home and was living separately in a rented house with their children. According to police and people who knew the couple, the problems between them had been continuing for almost two years.

Dispute linked to relationship with aunt

Investigators said the dispute began after Najma discovered that Nafees was involved in a relationship with his aunt. Nafees wanted to marry her and had been asking Najma for a divorce.

Najma refused to agree to the divorce and wanted to continue living with her husband and raising their children together. A colleague of Najma said she wished to save the marriage, but Nafees insisted on ending the relationship so he could marry his aunt. The colleague also said Nafees did not like Najma working as an Asha worker.

Police start investigation

Police reached the scene soon after receiving information about the crime. Officers recovered the scissors used in the attack as evidence. A murder case has been registered against Nafees based on a complaint filed by Najma’s brother, Akil.

Investigators are now questioning several people, including the aunt who was allegedly involved in the dispute. Senior police officials confirmed that the post-mortem examination of the victim has been completed.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and further legal action will follow based on the findings.

Officials also said they are collecting statements from neighbours, family members and other witnesses to understand exactly what happened that night.
