Lucknow: The Lucknow Police who were tasked to come out with a detailed investigation report with regard to suicide attempt by two women who claimed to be facing harassment in Amethi, on July 17, arrested Anup Patel, a Congress leader on charges of abetment to suicide.

Police arrested Patel on Thursday (July 30) and accused him of masterminding the suicide act before the chief minister’s residence to bring bad name to administration.

On July 17,  the mother-daughter duo of Safia and Gudiya had attempted self-immolation outside the UP Lok Bhawan to protest against police inaction over a dispute over a drain in their home in Amethi. This sparked a row over breach of security to chief minister Yogi Adityanath as well.

After the guards stopped the two and admitted them to the Civil Hospital where the mother succumbed to her burn injuries five days later on July 22, they were suspended from duty.

During investigation it was found that Patel had instigated the mother and daughter to attempt self-immolation.

It is reported that it was Patel who informed the media to reach the Lok Bhawan even before the incident. Based on this link, the police concluded that it was Patel's mischievous act that cost a woman's life.
