A boatman from Kashmir saved three tourists from drowning in the Jhelum River in Srinagar. However, he lost his life while retrieving their bag after being forced to jump back into the river.

The body of the boatman who was later identified as Ghulam Mohammad Guroo was missing till Saturday until a team from the Indian Navy traced his body later in the evening. 

According to eyewitnesses, the boat capsized during a cruise on the river on Wednesday evening. Guroo managed to save all the tourists and even got hold of the bag but unfortunately he couldn’t swim back and got swept away.

Other boatmen claim that after the tourists forced Guroo to swim back just to get their bag. However, they left the spot immediately after they saw him drowning. “You have to see his [Guroo’s] age. He was tired after saving the three persons, but he attempted again without caring for his self,” a police officer told the Hindustan Times.

Guroo, a bachelor, is survived by his sister Ruqaiya and brother Ramzan.
