Tathagata Roy had earlier mentioned that he would return to active politics with the permission of the Centre. When the President appointed Satyapal Malik as the Governor of Meghalaya on Tuesday (August 18), Tathagata Roy shared a gleeful tweet on social media.

After announcing the decision to appoint Satyapal Malik as the governor of Meghalaya, Tathagata Roy tweeted, “I was supposed to be relieved of my duties on May 20. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, I was asked to work until the next governor gets appointed.” He also added three 'smileys' at the end of the tweet. Many people on Twitter wished him good luck for his next innings.

Even after becoming the Governor, Tathagata Roy did not refrain from making political remarks. This time, as he wanted to return directly to West Bengal politics, many feel he is trying to establish his claim to be nominated as the BJP's chief minister candidate.

After the name of Satyapal Malik was announced from the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday (August 18), Tathagata spoke to him over the phone. He welcomed him with great honour and also tweeted stating it will take a few days for Satyapal Malik to reach Shillong.

A week ago, Tathagata said, "I will return to West Bengal politics if the Centre allows it." At the same time, criticism of West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh also became significant. Dilip Ghosh said, “There is gold in cow's milk.” Tathagatha mocked this statement and said that Bengalis do not like such unscientific talk. He mentioned that he has never made such sarcastic statements nor believed it. Dilip Ghosh did not react to his mockery. Many people have a view that Tathagata's remarks might have exposed internal tension of the BJP state unit.

When Article 370 was revoked a year ago, Satyapal Malik was the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. Two months after the revocation of Article 370, he was made the Governor of Goa. But recently his differences with chief minister Pramod Sawant over the situation of COVID-19 in Goa came to light. As a result, Satyapal Malik was made Governor of Meghalaya. Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has been given additional charge of Goa for the time being.
