In a move that would strengthen the government's ambitious 'Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao' initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced that the girl students will be admitted into all the Sainik Schools across the country.

In his 75th year of Independence Day speech from the ramparts of Red Fort, the Prime Minister said, "Today, be it education or Olympics our daughters are performing tremendously. We have to ensure that they get equal opportunities and they feel safe and respected."

PM Modi said, "Today, I am sharing an exciting thing. I used to get lakhs of messages from the girl students that they also want to study in Sainik Schools and that doors be opened for them too. Around two-and-a-half years back, an experiment was done in a Sainik School in Mizoram. Now, the government has decided that our daughters will now be able to study in Sainik schools too."

Earlier, only boy cadets were allowed admission to Sainik schools.

In March this year, the then MoS Defence Shripad Naik had said in Lok Sabha, "After the success of pilot Project for admission of girl cadets in Sainik School Chhingchhip, Mizoram, in the academic session 2018-19, the government has decided to admit girl cadets along with boys in all Sainik Schools from the academic session 2021-22."

Currently, there are 33 Sainik Schools across the country.

Sainik schools are being run by the Sainik Schools Society under the defence ministry.
