Jammu and Kashmir: Indian security forces eliminate 8 terrorists
The security forces and Jammu and Kashmir Police had launched joint operations on Thursday morning after specific information about the presence of terrorists. Police and Army said while five terrorists were killed in Shopian, three were killed in Pampore
Srinagar: Security forces gunned down eight terrorists in two separate encounters in Shopian and Pampore areas of Jammu and Kashmir in the last 24 hours. Joint operations are still continuing in Pampore and Shopian since Thursday night (June 18).
According to reports, five terrorists were killed in Shopian while three were killed in Pampore during parallel ongoing encounters.
Security forces had launched a cordon and search operation at Meej in Pampore area of Pulwama in South Kashmir on Thursday morning after receiving specific information about the presence of militants there, a police official said.
In one of the operations, in Pampore, security forces eliminated terrorists holed up inside a mosque without damage to the structure. No firing and IEDs were used in the encounter to prevent damage to the mosque, officials said.
“While conducting operation at Meez, Pampore, full sanctity of the mosque was maintained. Local people and the Masjid committee expressed happiness and thanked district police chief Mr Tahir for patience and good supervision. They also complimented the Army and CRPF involved in the operation for restraint,” police said.
A report on India Today quoted J&K Police DGP Dilbag Singh as saying, “Both the ongoing operations resumed in the morning today. At Meej, Pampore, after the killings of one militant, two others entered the local Jamia Mosque which is a huge structure. Forces have exercised restraint and only limited tactics have been used. Operation team is on the job.”
Kashmir Police IG said, “The Pampore operation took time but forces maintained the sanctity of the mosque. Both terrorists hiding inside the mosque have been killed. The operation is over.”
