Fake surrogacy scam busted: 5-member gang arrested, 11 children rescued, 18 more to be tracked in Karnataka
On the promise of helping to arrange children through surrogacy, a five-member gang reportedly cheated over a dozen childless couples and handed them over children from poor families. The Bengaluru police busted the scam and rescued 11 children so far.
The Bengaluru's South Division Police managed to bust a well-networked five-member gang that was running a surrogacy racket and cheated childless couples.
The gang involving five members consists of two women and three men. According to reports, two of them are working as a nurse and one as a compounder at a private hospital.
Seeing the desperation among childless couples, the gang members used to look for gullible ones and then track them from fertility centers and source their contacts and later used to give them offers.
Meanwhile, some from the team used to scout for poor and helpless families that are willing to sell their newborn and little old babies.
The accused have been identified as Dhanalakshmi, Mahesh Kumar, Rajanna Deviprasad, Janardhan aka Janarthan and Devi Shanmuga.
Few used to take the childless couples to hospital and get all the necessary test done. This process was to makes them believe that the child they get is theirs.
Later after a year and few months, a child will be handed over by collecting Rs 2 to Rs 3 lakhs.
Based on the information, the police raided a house and found fake 'mothers' cards. These cards were done to show to the childless couples and take them into confidence by telling them that the 'lactating mothers' are being taken care.
At present, 11 children have been rescued, parents who took the children from the accused are coming forward to legally adopt them now.
The police is yet to trace 18 more children and have taken the details from accused persons and are trying to reach couples who took children from the fake surrogacy gang.
