Burglars drill 2 foot hole in bank walls rob items worth 30 crores

Burglars these days have outdone the security system everywhere in India. This incident happened in a branch of Punjab National Bank in Modinagar, which is located on NH-58. Burglars drilled a 2-ft hole above the lockers in the locker room from an adjacent abandoned office and entered from there. They managed to open 30 lockers and stole the valuables.

The branch is located adjacent to an L-shaped plot which houses an abandoned rubber factory. On this plot, an empty office was placed right behind the bank's strongroom. Both of them shared  a common wall. The wall was 9-inches thick. The burglary was discovered around 9:45 am on Monday when bank staffer opened the security doors of the strongroom. A gaping hole on the wall welcomed them, which narrated a story in itself. The room was scattered and locker doors were opened.

Assistant general manager, SK Pancholi, speaking to the TOI said, "After opening the steel door, the officials were about to open the next door which is an iron grille like those found in prisons. However, they noticed through the grille that things had been scattered inside the strongroom. They also noticed that several lockers seemed to have been bro ken. They immediately called up the police control room."

He further added, "The strongroom had been closed on Friday around 6 pm. The bank was closed for two days after that. A security alarm is also installed inside the strongroom apart from a CCTV camera. Even if the alarm went off, there was no one to hear it since the bank was closed. There was no security guard at the branch. The branch depended on police patrol vehicles for security."

Police has collected fingerprints from the site. The bank operates from a rented building, which once belonged to the owner of the Modi rubber factory. investigating officers said that the burglars had broken the cement-concrete of the --inch thick wall with the help of hammers and pickaxes while the steel frame was cut open with the help of blade saws.

The equipment have been recovered from the site. Meanwhile, customers of the bank who have lost their properties worry whether they will get back their valuables. Some even complain that they have lost all their savings and jewellery.
