With the city receiving nearly half of the season's average rainfall, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a 10 per cent water cut across Mumbai beginning Monday. Inadequate rain in the catchment areas of seven lakes that supply potable water to the city has caused their existing water stocks to fall below 10 per cent.

So far, Mumbai has received 230.4 mm of rain, less than half of the average June rainfall of 493.1 mm. With no heavy rain predicted by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in the next few days, another water cut is likely.

"A 10 per cent water cut will be implemented due to insufficient rainfall and water stock in the seven dams and lakes that supply water to the Mumbai Metropolitan Area under BMC jurisdiction & areas where BMC supplies water beginning June 27, 2022," the BMC said in a tweet on Saturday.

As per the BMC press release, in addition to the city and its suburbs, areas under the Thane and Bhiwandi municipal corporations and some villages will see a 10 per cent reduction in water supply until lake levels improve.

In a similar move in August 2020, the BMC imposed a 20 per cent water cut when no heavy rain activity was observed in June and July.

Following IMD data, Mumbai's Santacruz observatory recorded 230.4-mm rainfall between June 1 and June 27, a shortfall of 226.1mm, or roughly 46 per cent of the average monthly rainfall. This starkly contrasts with last year's data, which showed that June received around 1,000 mm of rain, with over 200 mm falling in 24 hours during the first week of the month.

The IMD's five-day forecast does not show any heavy rain activity in the city. However, a yellow alert has been issued for June 29-30, indicating that heavy rain is possible in isolated areas and that moderate rain is 'very likely' on Tuesday, June 28, 2022.
