FollowWhen the initial cases of hair chopping began to reported they were just dismissed as a one-off case but soon the matter took on a turn for the worse. In a week’s time women began reporting instances of braids being cut while they slept. How these happened have also taken on an eerie tone.
From Gurgaon, a woman who was victim of this phantom barber with a penchant for braids, said that it was all over very soon and she suspects it is doing of a woman. From Rajasthan, Haryana and even some localities in Delhi began reporting incident of braids being cut. In most of these cases, the cut ends have been sent for forensic examination.
In three incidents reported in Delhi, the victims reported feeling pain in the head. The women, in separate localities, came back from work and complained of a sudden headache. This made them rest and when they woke up, their braids were lying cut beside them.
From Rewari, a woman said, she first saw a cat jump in through the window, within seconds it turned into a woman and that's the last thing she remembers. Another women in her 60s has become paralysed with fear after her hair was cut.
Men are equally perturbed by this sudden hair cutting spree. On Thursday, in Faridabad Sector 22, at an ancient Shiva Temple, the Youth Wing conducted a puja (havan) praying for the well being of the women. Both men and women participated in the worship and prayed that the person who has been doing this is caught soon. Women in the Faridabad- Palwal belt have become very scared and dread nightfall or even going out
In the midst of all this, some enterprising young singer from Haryana has even written a song on this mysterious braid cutter. It's now viral on social media. The song is close to four minutes long. The song emphasises how women value their long hair and braids, so much so that they would even sell their household items to secure it.
What’s getting people scared and anxious further is the inability to pinpoint who is this mysterious entity, is it a man? Is it a woman? No one has seen the ‘thing’. Some say it is an apparition, some say black magic is involved. The women usually see their cut hair lying somewhere in the room or on the power meters outside.
Needless to say, like in the beef incidents which whipped up mass hysteria, so too in this case rumours have been flying thick. People look upon strangers with suspicion and anything is enough to get their blood boiling.
A 60-year old Dalit woman, Maan Devi, was allegedly lynched in Agra after villagers thought she was a witch who was behind this hair cutting spree. At 3 in the morning the woman had awoken to relieve herself and went a bit further from her house and a girl sleeping outside saw a figure in white in the morning mist, mistook her to be an apparition, connecting the hair cutting and this woman, she screamed calling the attention of the neighbours.
The woman tried to explain that she had lost her way and that she belonged to the nearby localitybut the mob wouldn’t listen. She was beaten up pretty badly and was taken to the hospital and on her way back she died.
