Bengaluru: BMTC bus brake failure leads to death of 2; depot manager suspended


In a gruesome incident, a BMTC bus killed two and injured three persons after its brakes failed. Following the incident, the BMTC technical team has been appointed to submit a report. The BMTC has dispensed Rs 25,000 immediately to the victims’ family and ensured treatment of injured persons. The depot manager and assistant work superintendent have been placed under suspension.

The start of the week turned out to be a bad one for BMTC and commuters, as a bus heading to Majestic from Madanayakanahalli, killed two and injured three persons near Kottigepalya.

The victims have been identified as 50-year-old Byrappa and 40-year-old Vishvaradhya. Following the incident, top officials of the BMTC rushed to the spot and have announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 25000, which will be given to the dependents.

According to BMTC officials, vehicle number KA-57-F-696, route number 245M/3, from depot number 35 Seegehalli, while operating from Madanayakanahalli to Kempegowda Bus stand lost control and hit a bike and other vehicles near Kottigepalya.

It is said that when driver Venkatesh tried applying the brake, he could not stop the bus as the brakes failed. The BMTC has placed a technical team to file a report.

Meanwhile, the depot manager and assistant work superintendent have been placed under suspension.
