The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) biggest challenger in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, slammed the ruling party on Monday over the name of the Ukraine mission, which was started to bring Indians back from the war-torn nation. Yadav said he's not sure what kind of international acclaim the BJP-led central government has. The central government failed to evacuate Indians, and the evacuation operation was named "Operation Ganga" because Varanasi is also holding elections. He added he would have liked it if they had immediately saved Indians from Ukraine, as per news agency ANI.

Since last week, thousands of Indians have been brought back to the nation on special planes planned through Ukraine's neighbouring countries via Poland, the Slovak Republic, Romania, and Hungary. On February 24, Ukraine's airspace was restricted as Russia launched a surprise full-scale invasion.

Varanasi is one of the major constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, voting in Monday's seventh and final phase of the election. While campaigning in the temple town last week, the Prime Minister criticised his opponents and took a veiled dig at the Samajwadi Party. PM Modi said that Uttar Pradesh continuously needs leadership that is patriotic, honest, and willing to work hard for development. These dynasties' (Opposition) history is written in black. Looting the state, liberating terrorists, assisting rioters, and patronising the mafia and criminals are all part of their past. Such people can neither benefit the country nor the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Even though the mission to bring back Indians trapped in Ukraine was hastened up last week as violence worsened, the ruling party has come under fire from the opposition.

The Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh last week while referring to a minister's remark, said there is a war in Ukraine. Thousands of Indian students study there. Indian youths are stuck there amid bombing. Youths are sending videos of appeals to save them. He stressed that the Prime Minister's people said students went to Ukraine because they did not get admission to medical colleges in India. Students failed here and so went to Ukraine. Are these not the students from India? Are they not ours? Is it not the government's responsibility to bring them back?" Rahul Gandhi said.

Meanwhile, PM Modi spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday and thanked him for his assistance in the evacuation.
