New Delhi: Indian ace badminton player Saina Nehwal joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today.

The badminton ace joined the party in the presence of the party's national general secretary Arun Singh.

Accompanying her, was her sister Chandranshu who also joined the party today.

Speaking to reporters, Saina said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working hard for the country and that inspired her.

Including Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), Saina has lent her support to the BJP government earlier.

An ANI report had earlier stated that the sportsperson will join the BJP and news reports quoted JP Nadda confirming the development that was to take place on January 29.

However, there is no clarity on her role in the party as more details are awaited.

Saina has not had good outings of late. On January 22 she was knocked out of Thailand Masters after losing to Denmark's Line Kjaersfeldt 21-13, 17-21, 21-15.

The former world number 1 and Olympics bronze medallist has trained with Pullela Gopichand, and later at Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bengaluru, an act that her former coach was not happy with, according to reports.

Saina Nehwal is a native of Haryana and was born in Hisar.

The shuttler has over 23 international titles to her credit and also has a huge fan base, owing to her accomplishments.

She joins other sportspersons such as cricketer Gautham Gambhir and Commonwealth Games medal-winning wrestler Babita Phogat in joining the Bharatiya Janata Party.
