In a henious incident in Jalandhar, a 19-year-old college student gets his girlfriend raped so that he does not have to marry her later. Harpreet Singh Happy, along with his friends Bindu and Ravi hatched a plan against the girl so that Happy could use the incident as an excuse not to marry her. Happy and the girl were classmates in the same college and had decided to get married after a long courtship.

However, he seemed to have a change of mind and decided otherwise. According to the girl's statement, Happy called her up at 10:30 pm on July 20 and said that he would be picking her up to meet his parents. He suddenly asked her to get off from his bike in the middle of the road near a local grain market on the pretext of bringing his parents there. In a statement to the cops, she said, "After some time, Bindu and Ravi came there on a bike and said Harpreet had sent them, and that they would drop me to his house."

However, they took her to an abandoned room in a field and raped her. They then took her to an abandoned haveli and raped her again. The case came to light when the girl complained to the police. Happy was arrested and a case under sections 376D (gang-rape), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 417 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against him and his two friends. Meanwhile, station house officer Harjeet Singh said that medical examination at the local civil hospital confirmed sexual assault. He also said that Bindu and Ravi will be arrested soon and that Happy would be produced in a local court on Tuesday. The statement of the victim will also be recorded in the presence of the magistrate to make it admissible as an evidence.
