Indian Army is set to launch the Anuman app, which has been designed and developed to provide detailed weather projections to the army’s deployments along the China border. The app will be launched on May 19 in the national capital.

Indian Army Vice Chief Lt Gen MV Suchindra Kumar will launch the app, which has been developed in collaboration with National Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF). The Indian Army and NCMRWF had inked an MoU on November 24 last year.

6 projects aimed at making Indian Army future-ready, more lethal

As per the MoU, the Indian Army will help NCMRWF with a collection of observations along Northern borders and will in the near future receive customized products for higher-resolution weather forecasts for its components along the borders with China.

The app is critical since the meteorological inputs for the commanders in the field have a greater significance. It helps them to plan in carrying out operations. The Artillery units use them on a regular basis to "temper its weapon platforms before firing projectiles through the earth’s atmosphere".

It should be noted that data from NCMRWF has helped artillery fire more accurately. It is pertinent to mention here that the Army is observing 2023 as the 'Year of Transformation' and has been working on several technologies-driven projects that include a battlefield surveillance system, Situational Awareness Module for the Army, Situational Reporting Over Enterprise-Class GIS Platform (E-Sitrep), Project Avagat, Project Indra among others.

These projects are aimed to 'reshape and re-engineer' the functional processes and bring in a 'quantum jump' in the force's capabilities.

"Automation in the force is a continuous process which keeps evolving with technology. A number of secure automation projects are underway to increase the digital footprints of the Indian Army, with the ultimate aim of simplifying Systems, Processes & Functions to enhance not only the operational efficiency; but also our Human Resource Management, Logistics, Inventory Management, Medical services, other administrative functions and functional efficiency," senior Indian Army official said.
