Pragyan Ojha Takes Over as Chief of Selection Committee

The former India spinner Pragyan Ojha has been promoted to the role of the BCCI senior men’s team chief selector, succeeding Ajit Agarkar, stepping into the role following Ajit Agarkar’s departure.

Ojha has already been part of the selection committee as the South Zone representative and was the front-runner to take over the helm of excellence. In place of Ojha, another former India spinner, Ramesh Powar has stepped into the panel to fill the vacant West Zone representative post, which Ajit Agarkar held previously.

🚨 Announcement 🚨

Mr Ramesh Powar @imrameshpowar appointed to Men’s Selection Committee.

Based on seniority (most Tests), Mr Pragyan Ojha @pragyanojha will chair the Committee.

BCCI appreciates Mr Ajit Agarkar @imAagarkar for his commitment, conviction and contribution during his tenure as Chairman of the Committee.

Pragyan Ojha’s promotion to the chief of the selection committee was based on his seniority, having played 24 Test matches, picking 113 wickets in the longest format. Ramesh Powar’s addition to the selection panel has reshaped the committee, with Ojha taking charge as chief selector and the former India spinner joining as the West Zone representative.

The five-member committee comprises Pragyan Ojha, Shiv Sundar Das, RP Singh, Ajay Ratra and Powar, who will collectively oversee selections for India’s senior men’s team.

Taking Over a Successful Tenure

As chief selector, Pragyan Ojha is not stepping into the role left by Ajit Agarkar empty-handed. During Agarkar’s 4-year tenure, Team India won the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups, the 2025 Champions Trophy, two Asian Cup titles, and as many gold medals at the Asian Games, while also reaching the 2023 ODI World Cup final.

Ojha was part of the selection committee when the Men in Blue won the 2025 Asia Cup, the 2026 T20 World Cup, and the 2026 Asian Games gold medal, and now stepping into the leadership role feels like a natural progression rather than a sudden shift in strategy.

Having worked alongside Ajit Agarkar since September 2025, Ojha understands the established blueprint inside out and brings crucial stability to the transition.

Planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup

One of the key mandates for the Ojha-led panel will be designing a roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. As Team India prepares for the marquee event, the Men in Blue will play the five-match ODI series against New Zealand in November, which will mark the beginning of their structured build-up to the quadrennial tournament.

Having been part of the selection committee when Team India played six ODI bilateral series against Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, England, Afghanistan, and the West Indies, the former spinner is well-versed with the core group.

With senior players, including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, approaching the final phase of their ODI careers and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s future in the ODI setup remaining uncertain after he was left out of India's squad for the New Zealand series, the new chief selector will face the challenge of balancing the experience of senior players with opportunities for emerging talent ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

Rohit Sharma’s Future in ODI Setup

When Ajit Agarkar was serving as the BCCI chief selector, one of the key concerns about Rohit Sharma’s future in the ODI setup centred on his place in India’s plans for the 2027 World Cup, with reports suggesting that the selectors considered moving on from the former India captain ahead of the marquee event.

Ahead of the Lord’s ODI, where Rohit scored a century, the BCCI selection committee reportedly held discussions with the veteran opener regarding his future roadmap, but the board backed him to be part of India’s plans built up to the World Cup. It was reported that Ojha was tasked with communicating the selection committee’s stance to Rohit in July this year.

Now, taking over as the chief of the selection committee, Pragyan Ojha, who played with Rohit Sharma both at the national level and in the IPL for Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians, is uniquely positioned to handle these high-level conversations. Their long-standing rapport and mutual respect could help Ojha handle discussions about Rohit’s future and India’s World Cup plans.

Tighter Synergy with the Centre of Excellence

The BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru has apparently been discussed during the selection committee’s meetings during Ajit Agarkar’s tenure, as well as during VVS Laxman's involvement in selection meetings as the head of the CoE.

With recurring injuries affecting key players like Hardik Pandya, Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna, their rehabilitation timelines have affected their availability for the upcoming New Zealand series; closer coordination with the CoE will be vital for managing workloads and ensuring players regain full fitness before selection.

As Pragyan Ojha and VVS Laxman played together for Hyderabad and India, including the famous 10th-wicket partnership to pull off a thrilling one-wicket win over Australia in the 2010 Mohali Test, their deep mutual trust will be pivotal. Their existing rapport ensures that the selection panel and Bengaluru-based high-performance facility work as a cohesive unit.

More Focus on Domestic Cricketers

Following a disastrous Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee mandated the centrally contracted Indian cricketers to play domestic cricket whenever they are not on national duty.

This strict directive, aimed at addressing technical vulnerabilities and red-ball rust, will remain a cornerstone under Pragyan Ojha's leadership. By closely monitoring performances in the Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments, including the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy, the restructured panel aims to bridge the gap between domestic dominance and international success.

In fact, Ojha and RP Singh, who are part of the restructured selection panel, recommended the inclusion of Ishan Kishan during the 2025 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final, where his explosive century helped Jharkhand clinch the title and strengthened his case for an India comeback. As a member of the selection committee, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Gurnoor Brar, Manav Suthar, and Naman Dhir made their national debuts.
