A Brief History Of Manali

Origin Of The Name: Manali comes from Manu-Alaya, meaning “the abode of Sage Manu.” According to legend, Sage Manu lived here after the great flood to recreate human life, giving the town deep mythological significance.

Valley Of The Gods: The surrounding Kullu Valley is often called the “Valley of the Gods” due to its numerous ancient temples and strong spiritual traditions that continue to shape local life.

Epic Connections: Manali finds mention in Hindu epics such as the Mahabharata. The iconic Hidimba Devi Temple is dedicated to Hidimba.

Medieval Period: During medieval times, Manali was part of the Kullu principality. Many important temples built in the 16th century.

Trade And Cultural Exchange: Historically, Manali served as an important stop on ancient trade routes linking India with Tibet and Central Asia, contributing to its cultural diversity.
