What Happens If A Cobra Bites Another Snake? Does It Die? Read On

A snake bite easily kills a human being. But what happens when a venomous snake bites another snake? Does the venom work if both snakes belong to the same species? Will a snake die if it bites itself? We break down the exact science behind this.

What happens when a snake bites another snake?

Snakes use venom to kill their prey or defend themselves. The venom's impact depends on a few things when one snake bites another. The biter's species, the victim's species, and the venom amount matter the most here.

The venom might show a lesser effect if two snakes of the same species fight. But you cannot say the venom fails completely. The bite wound itself causes severe damage, and the venom still shows its effect.

Does venom fail against the same species?

Some snakes possess a natural defense system against their own species' venom. Experts call this venom resistance. Specific proteins inside their bodies stop the dangerous venom elements from attacking the cells.

For example, some cobras can easily resist the nerve-damaging venom of their own kind. But this defense system does not work the same way for all snakes. So, assuming a cobra takes no damage when another cobra bites it is completely wrong.

Is a cross-species bite deadly?

A snake faces definite danger if a different species bites it. The venom causes severe impact because venom characteristics change across species. Some venoms attack the nervous system, while others clot the blood instantly.

A snake might resist its own venom, but it usually fails to block a different species' venom. For instance, a highly venomous King Cobra will likely kill a different snake if it bites it. The final result always depends on the venom amount and the victim snake's immunity.

What happens if a snake bites itself?

Snakes rarely bite themselves. A snake does not automatically die from the venom even if it bites itself by accident. Some snakes carry a natural strength to resist their own venom. But you cannot assume a snake is completely immune to its own poison.

The final impact depends heavily on the bite location and the venom amount. The physical bite wound also creates a huge risk. Therefore, science does not support the claim that a snake stays perfectly fine after biting itself.
