Missed Train in India? Know IRCTC Ticket Refund Rules and Step-by-Step Process
Indian Railways offers many passenger-friendly rules, but most travellers miss benefits due to a lack of awareness. If you miss a booked train, what should you do next? Are refunds or other options available? Here’s a quick guide to understand it.

What should you do if you miss your booked train?
We've all been there—stuck in city traffic, watching the clock, and worried about missing our train. It's a common nightmare for many. But if you do miss your train after buying a ticket, can you get your money back? Let's find out what the railway rules say.

General tickets are valid for 3 hours
If you have a general, unreserved ticket and miss your train, don't worry. You can use the same ticket to travel on another regular train on the same route. Usually, a general ticket is valid for three hours. But remember, if you try to board premium trains like the Rajdhani, Shatabdi, or Vande Bharat with this ticket, you will be fined.
Ticket Deposit Receipt
Things are different for reserved tickets. If you miss your booked train, you cannot use that ticket to travel on another one. Doing so will get you fined. The first thing you must do is file a TDR, which stands for Ticket Deposit Receipt, to claim a refund.
Your seat is safe for the next 2 stations
You are likely to get a refund only if your original train was delayed by more than three hours. Here's another useful tip: even if you miss the train at your boarding station, the railway won't give your seat to someone else until the train has passed the next two stops.
