BJP leader Sovan Chatterjee and Baisakhi Banerjee were supposed to hold a bike rally of the BJP from Khidirpur on Monday (January 4). However, the Lalbazar police on Sunday (January 3) did not give permission to hold the rally. As a result, uncertainty has been created before the rally.
The BJP leaders of Kolkata zone sat in a meeting to discuss about the rally and also to decide on the next steps after the Kolkata police restricted the party to hold rallies.
According to sources, after the meeting, it was decided that the BJP will not clash with the police. The rally will start at a specific time and at a specific place. How far the rally will go will be decided after observing the situation.
On Monday, Sovan Chatterjee was supposed to travel from Khidirpur to the state office of the BJP, touring a wide area of South Kolkata. His friend Baishakhi Banerjee and BJP's all-India leader Kailash Vijayvargiya was supposed to be present with Sovan.
According to the schedule, the Kolkata police were informed about the route of the rally (starting from Diamond Harbor Road via Mominpur, New Alipore, Tollygunge, Rasbihari Hazra Crossing, Exide Junction, KC Das Junction, Central Avenue, Murlidhar Sen Lane, and state BJP headquarters).
However, the Kolkata police said that road shows will not be allowed. Lalbazar police explained that if there is a road show with cars and bikes, there could be a huge traffic jam in the area. So, road shows will not be allowed in this situation.
BJP leaders have reacted strongly to the state's move. Party spokesperson Shamik Bhattacharya said sarcastically, "This incident shows how much the Trinamool Congress has faith in democracy."
According to sources, there may be a bike procession led by BJP leader Rakesh Singh. Lots of cars have also been prepared for the road show.
Anticipating that the nature of the incident may reach a violent stage, Lalbazar police has informed that the issue of security will be taken seriously.
