Mumbai to Host Historic India Premiere of The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan’s ambitious historical epic The Odyssey will have its India premiere in Mumbai this July, marking a significant milestone for Indian moviegoers. The special screening will take place at the PVR Icon IMAX cinema at Phoenix Palladium ahead of the film’s worldwide release on July 17.

Adding to the excitement, Nolan will be joined by actor Matt Damon, who plays the lead role of Odysseus, and Tom Holland, who portrays Telemachus. Producer Emma Thomas is also expected to attend the event. This will be the first Christopher Nolan film to officially premiere in India, making the occasion particularly special for the filmmaker’s large fan base in the country.

A Grand Retelling of Homer’s Legendary Epic

Based on Homer’s timeless Greek classic, The Odyssey follows the perilous journey of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War. His voyage spans a decade and is filled with dangerous encounters, mythical creatures, and formidable adversaries.

While Odysseus struggles to make his way back, his wife Penelope and son Telemachus face their own challenges at home, defending their kingdom from persistent suitors who believe the king is dead. Nolan’s screenplay reportedly draws inspiration from acclaimed translator Emily Wilson’s interpretation of the ancient epic, promising a fresh cinematic take on the legendary tale.

Star-Studded Cast and IMAX-First Filmmaking

The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, and Tom Holland as Telemachus. The supporting lineup includes Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Charlize Theron as Calypso, Samantha Morton as Circe, and Mia Goth as Melantho.

Other notable performances come from Lupita Nyong’o, Joe Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Himesh Patel, Elliot Page, Shiloh Fernandez, and Maurice Compte. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema has shot the entire 172-minute feature exclusively using IMAX cameras, making it one of the most technically ambitious projects of Nolan’s career and a visual spectacle designed for the big screen.
