Taapsee Pannu starrrer Thappad was a tight slap on the male patriarchy and normalising physical abuse in a relationship. Taapsee portrayed the character of an everyday bold woman who stood against the slap she received from her husband. The film helped to explore and question the very relationship of a man and a woman in marriage and also gender equality, it was an engaging and enchanting film.
Chhapaak was definitely the 'woman film of the year', starring Deepika Padukone. The actor played the role of an acid attack survivor, Laxmi Agarwal, and her struggle through life in quest of justice. Padukone called it one of her most difficult roles to play. The film also starred Vikrant Massey.
The biopic of Shakuntala Devi, the human-computer was portrayed by none other than Vidya Balan. The movie celebrated the woman who enjoyed math, Vidya's natural acting skill brought the whole film together.
The sports drama film starring Kangana Ranaut was directed by Ashwini Iyer Tiwari. The film narrates the story of a former Kabaddi player who strives hard to make comeback to the sports world while managing her family and household duties. Kangana's character was shown with a bit of regret as she decides to take up the sports again, rather than showing her extremely strong-headed and firm in the decision.

Gunjan Saxena was a tale of courage fire and passion. There was no love angle or any other sideline story. It was a pure story of a woman who aims to serve her country and goes leaps and bounds to achieve it. Gunjan Saxena during that time flew Cheetah helicopter in Combat Zone and saved the lives of many Indian soldiers.Janhvi Kapoor's acting was a breath of fresh air in the entire film. Pankaj Tripathi's character as her father was well-appreciated as he guides her through the journey. However, the film was caught in controversy for portraying false scenes abut the ill-treatment of females in the Air Force.
