‘Bhoot’ Shooting Location Still Vacant?

During a special showing of Bhoot at the Red Lorry Film Festival 2026 in Mumbai, Varma revealed that potential tenants had repeatedly refused to move into the Lokhandwala Complex flats. According to the filmmaker, the flat became well-known following the film's release, and no one has been willing to live there since filming ended more than 20 years ago.

Why was Bhoot recorded in a flat?

Varma noted that the choice to shoot the film in an apartment block rather than a cottage was intentional. Because the narrative was set in Mumbai, he thought adopting a standard residential flat would help the horror feel more grounded and accessible to audiences.

The film, starring Ajay Devgn and Urmila Matondkar, is about a married couple who move into an apparently regular flat, only to discover a terrible otherworldly presence.

The filmmaker also revealed that a large portion of the film was shot in a single flat over approximately 30 days. Varma claimed he was able to complete the production quickly since most sequences were shot in one location.

"It's been more than 20 years, and that flat is still vacant," Varma told the audience, adding that the building became well-known after the film was released.

Varma also discussed his decision to cast Matondkar in the starring role. He stated that a close-up expression from the song "Hai Rama" in his last film, Rangeela, convinced him she could play the severe emotional swings necessary for Bhoot.

Nana Patekar, Rekha, Fardeen Khan, and Tanuja comprised the film's supporting ensemble. Following the success of the original film, Varma directed the sequel Bhoot Returns in 2012, which starred Manisha Koirala.

Varma has directed numerous additional horror films, including Raat, Phoonk, and Phoonk 2. During his festival visit, he also announced that work on Sarkar 4, the political crime saga that began with the Amitabh Bachchan film, is set to begin soon.
