Joe Root smashes record with 22nd Test century
Root was the headline in the English innings as he scored yet another century in consecutive Tests. As a result:
- He has become the highest-scoring Test centurion as an English skipper in a calendar, having scored five this year and going past Graham Gooch, Michael Atherton and Andrew Strauss (four each in 1990, 1994 and 2009).
- He has also become the joint third-most Test centurion for England along with Wally Hammond, Colin Cowdrey, Geoffrey Boycott and Ian Bell, while he is behind Alastair Cook (33) and Kevin Pietersen (23).
- While it was Root's first instance of scoring consecutive Test centuries, it was also the first time since Ian Bell in 2013 that an Englishman has scored a Test century in successive innings.
- Also, it was his 11th century as Test skipper while it was the joint second-most as English skipper.
- It was also the joint-most 150-plus by an Englishman, along with Alastair Cook (11), besides being the most by an English skipper (6).
- He has become the second-highest Test centurion against India, having scored seven, while the list is led by Gary Sobers, Viv Richards, Ricky Ponting and Steve Smith (8).
- Furthermore, he became the most 150-plus scorer in Tests at Lord's, going past Graham Gooch and Kevin Pietersen (3).
- Moreover, he has become the second-highest 175-plus scorer at a venue (four at Lord's) after Kumar Sangakkara's five at Colombo.
- Also, in an interesting stat, he scored the second-highest Test score (180*) by a batsman in his 196th innings, with the record lying with Gooch (210).
