Social media is divided between those who think that this overreaction to the video is unnecessary, and those who think strict action should be taken against comedians who sell insult under the garb of comedy.

Newsable contacted India’s first stand-up comedian, Shekhar Suman, to talk about the issue. The ‘King of wit’ who once ruled small screen with his popular show Movers and Shakers has called Tanmay’s act “deplorable”.

“This is not wit and humour. This is complete garbage packaged as comedy. Insult can never be passed as humour. Tanmay was just looking for two min fame with this video. His act is shameful,” said Shekhar.

He further added, “People have compared me to him and have asked me what my take on the entire issue is. I request everyone not to mention my name with him. I am far removed from all this. My forte was satire, I never did anything disrespectful or shameful. There is a difference between comedy and insult and it’s a very fine line. People should understand that. You can’t degrade people in the name of comedy.”

Shekhar Suman was recently in the news when his son, Adhyayayen Suman, opened up about his relationship with ex-girlfriend Kangana Ranaut.
