'Pink' forces us to face all that is wrong with our patriarchal society

Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu’s Pink is a contemporary youth-centric film deals with the sensitive issue of sexual harrassment. The movie also carries a powerful socially-relevant message about the choices young working women of today make and about respecting those choices. 

 

Which makes the courtroom drama worth a watch, filled as it is with power-packed performances and hard-hitting dialogues from Amitabh Bachchan. 

 

 

Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury and Shoojit Sircar deserve a bow and all the applause for the manner on which they have dealt with this subject.

 

Other than Amitabh Bachchan, the main leads in the film are the three girls around whom the story revolves. Kriti Kulhari plays the Lucknow girl Falak Ali, who is stays strong and fights for her friend Mirnal Arora (Taapsee Pannu). Andrea Tariang plays the role of a North Eastern girl named Andrea, who gives an eye-opener on the reality of racism and violence that the North Eastern Indians have to face in their day-to-day life.

 

The film also stars Kirti Kulhari, Andrea Tariang, Angad Bedi, Piyush Mishra and Dhritiman Chatterjee in major roles. 

 

 

The movie may have opened slow in the box-office, but Pink has slowly picked up pace with each passing day.  

 

Popular box-office analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#Pink is ROCK-STEADY… Fri 4.32 cr, Sat 7.65 cr, Sun 9.54 cr, Mon 3.78 cr, Tue 3.51 cr. Total: ₹ 28.80 cr. India biz.”

 

He also wrote about how the film is winning international box office. “#Pink – OVERSEAS: Went from strength to strength with each passing day. UAE & USA-Canada contributed maximum. Total: $ 978,744 [₹ 6.55 cr]”.

 

 

 

Perhaps keeping an eye on the low collections, Pink’s co-producer Shoojit Sircar announced at a press conference that he wanted the film to be tax free, “We have requested the Delhi government and the main (centre) government to make it tax free. We are talking. Some of the ministries came and saw the film, and they have liked it. There will be a special screening for the Information and Broadcasting ministry happening this week."

 

He also added "For 'Pink', numbers don't matter to me. I am not thinking about how much the film has earned. I am not bothered about how much business the film is making. The unprecedented love from the media and audience is what is dear to me," 

 

 

Here are a few of Amitabh's and Taapsee's hard hitting dialogues that will embarrass and enlighten you at the same time:

• These boys must realise that No ka matlab No hota hai. Use bolne wali ladki koi parichit ho, friend ho, girlfriend ho, koi sex worker ho ya aapki apni biwi hi kyu na ho. ‘No’ means no and when someone says No, you stop.
• Agar ladkiyan, ladkon ke saath dinner ya drinks pe jaati hai to ye unki apni choice hoti hai. Available hone ka sign board nahi banke jaati.
• Jo ladkiyan party mei jaati hai aur drink karti hai, wo pushtaini hak ban jaati hai aapka.
• Rock show mei hai to hint hai. Library ya mandir mein hai to hint nahi hai! Venue decide karta hai aapka character.
• ‘Na’ sirf ek shabd nahi… apne aap mein pura vakya hai. Ise kisi tark, spashtikaran,explanation ya vyakhya ki jaroorat nahi hoti.
• Sharab ko yaha ek galat character ki nishani maana jaata hai, sirf ladkiyon ke liye. Ladkon ke liye to ye sirf ek Health Hazard hai!
• Hamare yaha ghadi ki sui, character decide karti hai

 

And last, but not least, Amitabh's poem in the end credits is worth sitting through.

 

 

 

“Chunar uda ke dhwaj bana, Gagan bhi kapkapaaega
Agar teri chunar giri toh ek bhookamp aaega
Tu khud ki khoj mein nikal, tu kis liye hataash hai
Tu chal tere wajood ki samay ko bhi talaash hai.”

 

But the one question that comes to mind is - Why is Pink is called PINK? Just because the storyline revolves around three girls?
