West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee staged a protest in Kolkata on Tuesday to protest Election Commission's ban on her.

The wheelchair-bound TMC chief staged a sit-in at around 11:40 pm. No TMC leaders or supporters were spotted nearby.

"No party leaders are allowed near the site of the protest. She is sitting there alone," a TMC leader said.

However, she sat alone in her dharna with no party colleagues, flags or banners.

Unsatisfied with Banerjee’s response to its notices for her remarks against Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and a statement which had alleged religious overtones, the EC barred the Trinamool Congress supremo from campaigning from 8 pm on April 12 to 8 pm on April 13.

On April 7 and April 8, the ECI sent notices to the Trinamool chief for allegedly urging Muslims to guard against those splitting their votes and for asking people to “gherao” (block) central paramilitary security forces respectively. Commenting on her reply to these notices, the poll body said Mamata Banerjee has “selectively chosen parts of her speech in her reply” and that “her reply has yet again conveniently left out key parts of her speech, perhaps due to selective amnesia.”

The Assembly election for the first four phases in West Bengal have been conducted. The remaining phases of the ongoing elections will take place from April 17 and April 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 2.
