Kolkata: Polling began at 7 am for 34 seats in the seventh phase of the state assembly elections amid tight security and a rampaging second wave of Covid-19.

"We will win," said TMC leaders even as 37.72% voter turnout was recorded till 11 am.

With the seventh phase of the West Bengal assembly polls underway on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to exercise their franchise and follow all Covid-19 related protocols.

"The seventh phase of the West Bengal elections takes place today. Urging people to exercise their franchise and follow all COVID-19 related protocols," PM Modi tweeted.

The seventh phase of polling, which will be held at 12,068 polling stations, will decide the fate of 284 candidates across 34 assembly constituencies.

For this phase, the election commission has said that 796 companies of central forces have been deployed to ensure free and fair voting.

It has said that security has been beefed up across the state particularly after the Cooch Behar incident on April 10 that claimed the lives of five people.
