Tamil Nadu: Kamal Haasan’s MNM finalises seat sharing with allies, to fight in 154 seats
Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) will contest 154 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election. The remaining 80 seats have been assigned to MNM’s alliance partners AISMK and IJK.
FollowChennai: Three days ahead of the issue of poll notification for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections 2021, the political parties in the state are giving a final touch to their alliances.
Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) has finalised the seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly election with founder Kamal Haasan on Monday saying the party will contest 154 of 234 seats.
Kamal Haasan said the party left the remaining 80 seats for its two alliance partners -- All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK) and Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi – that will contest on 40 seats each.
"The parties have committed to the common goal of transforming Tamil Nadu by fulfilling the long-pending aspirations of the people. With the common agenda of restoring the pride and glory of Tamil Nadu, they have decided to embark on a long-lasting journey together," a document released by the party read.
Confirming an electoral alliance with the MNM, AISMK founder Sarath Kumar had earlier said Kamal Haasan will be its chief ministerial candidate.
“In principle, we have decided to journey together. Kamal Haasan will be the chief minister candidate for the emerging alliance,” Kumar had said.
The MNM had secured around 4% votes in 2019 Lok Sabha election, with its share going as high as 10% in the urban pockets.
The DMK has also finalised its seat-sharing talks with Congress and CPI-M. While it has given six seats to the CPI(M), Congress has got 25 seats, MDMK, VCK and CPI six each, IUML three MMK has got two. Vaiko’s MDMK will be contesting polls on the DMK’s Rising Sun symbol.
