Election Commission has banned all victory processions on or after the counting of votes on May 2.

The decision comes a day after the Madras High Court took the Election Commission to task while hearing a suo motu case concerning the management of the Covid situation in Tamil Nadu.

The bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice S Ramamoorthy observed that the Election Commission has abdicated its responsibility and threatened to stop counting on May 2 if the poll body does not put in place a proper plan to ensure adherence to Covid-19 protocol.

Observing that Election Commission officers should be booked on murder charges, Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee had said, "Your institution is singularly responsible for the situation today."

The high court lamented the inaction by Election Commission against erring political parties despite its orders.
