The fifth Test between India and England for the Pataudi Trophy has been called off in Manchester. While India currently leads the series 2-1, it is unclear what the result of the series now stands, as the International Cricket Council is due to take a call on the same.

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has offered England and Wales Cricket Board to reschedule the Test to a later date. Notably, India is scheduled to tour England again next year for limited-overs contests.

Considering the same, legendary former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar has welcomed the move by the BCCI. He has also reminded India to honour a similar move made by England in 2008, he told Sony Sports.

In 2008, England was touring India for seven One-Day Internationals and a couple of Tests. While India was leading the ODIs 5-0, the remaining two games were called off following the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, as India won the series 5-0.

However, the Test series was rearranged, and England revisited after a couple of weeks, while the series was played under heavy security cover. India went on to win the series 1-0.

Gavaskar recalled that English skipper Kevin Pietersen played a significant role in convincing the ECB to return to India and complete the tour. He feels that India should play the remaining Test after the IPL next year, and it would make appropriate and perfect sense for India to honour England's gesture from 2008.

As of now, it is to be seen if ICC deems the fifth Test as abandoned or forfeit. If abandoned, India wins the series 2-1, while a forfeit would lead to England squaring a series. However, if the rescheduling goes ahead, the series continues. But, there is also a possibility that the rescheduled Test next year could be a one-off.
