In what comes as a setback for Team India ahead of its five-Test series for the Pataudi Trophy against England, young uncapped pacer Avesh Khan has been ruled out of the entire series. He has suffered a fracture on his left thumb, leading to the situation.

Avesh was a part of the team in the ongoing warm-up clash against County Select XI at the Riverside Ground in Chester-Le-Street on Tuesday. He replaced one of the players who are currently in isolation after coming in contact with COVID positive people.

It was during his tenth over when he stopped a back-drive shot from Hanuma Vihari. As the medical team immediately rushed out to him, he was in severe pain, while one of the commentators was heard saying that he had seemingly dislocated his thumb.

"Fast bowler Avesh Khan remains under observation of the Medical Team. He will not be taking any further part on Day 2 and Day 3 of the warm-up game," the Board of Control for Cricket in India had said on Wednesday.

As per a senior BCCI official, Avesh's injury will take some time to heal, as he was doubtful of recovering during the tour. Meanwhile, he also confirmed that while the Indians would have a pacer short in nets, there is unlikely to be any replacement for him.

"Avesh is not likely to take any further part in the series, leave alone this game. It's a thumb fracture. He will not be bowling for at least a month and after that rehabilitation is likely to start. In another three days, the picture is supposed to get clearer," the source told PTI.
