Former two-time champion Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) continued its fine run against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), trouncing the side by 21 runs in Match 36 of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The visiting Jason Roy, whose classy knock of 56 was better than the hosts' Virat Kohli's 54. While KKR made it double over RCB this season, netizens were left amazed.

Winning the coin toss, RCB opted to bowl, with Virat Kohli leading again, as Faf du Plessis was still not entirely fit to field. KKR began on a solid note, with openers Jason Roy (56) and N Jagadeesan (27) putting on an 83-run partnership before the latter fell to pacer Vijaykumar Vyshak in the tenth over.

While Roy brought up his fourth IPL half-century, he was knocked over in the same over, five runs later. However, things did not change significantly for the visitors, as Venkatesh Iyer (31) and skipper Nitish Rana (48) added 80 for the third wicket to keep themselves going for a respectable total.

In the 18th, Rana was dismissed by leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, followed by Iyer in the same over, a run later. However, Kolkata managed to continue with its scoring rate and eventually finished with a formidable total of 200/5. Three dropped catches also heavily aided its cause. For Bangalore, Hasaranga and Vyshak scalped a couple each, whereas the former was economical.

Before the Royal Challengers' chase, they brought in de Plessis for pacer Harshal Patel, while the Knight Riders replaced Roy with leg-spinner Suyash Sharma. The hosts began quickly but shaky, losing three for 58 by the sixth over of the PowerPlay (PP). After that, opener Kohli (54) and Mahipal Lomror (34) added 55 for the fourth wicket before the latter fell to leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy in the 12th.

While Kohli brought up his 49th IPL 50, he fell to pacer Andre Russell in the subsequent over, a couple of runs later. Thereon, RCB struggled to get the partnerships going and kept losing wickets regularly at around 20-odd runs, eventually finishing on 179/8, while KKR won by 21 runs. For the winner, Chakravarthy grabbed three, while he was also highly economical.
