Former champion Rajasthan Royals came up with an all-round performance to outplay fellow former champion Sunrisers Hyderabad by 55 runs in Match 28 of the 2021 Indian Premier League at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Sunday. It was opener Jos Buttler, whose centurion knock of 125, aided by skipper Sanju Samson (48), handed SRH a heavy target of 221. At the same time, pacers Mustafizur Rahman and Chris Morris did it with the ball.

Winning the toss, SRH skipper Kane Williamson elected to bowl first. He made three changes, bringing in Mohammad Nabi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Abdul Samad for David Warner, Jagadeesha Suchith and Siddharth Kaul. Meanwhile, Samson made a couple of changes and promoted Kartik Tyagi and Anuj Rawat for Jaydev Unadkat and Shivam Dube.

RR was off to a nervy start, losing Yashasvi Jaiswalfor mere 12 in the third over with just 17 runs on the board, as spinner Rashid Khan trapped him leg-before. Nevertheless, Buttler and Samson took charge of the innings there, and it was for good.

The two contributed to a massive 150-run stand for the second wicket, as Buttler brought up his 11th half-century in the process. Meanwhile, in the 17th over, Samson fell short of his 14th IPL 50, as pacer Vijay Shankar dismissed him.

Nonetheless, following Samson's dismissal, Buttler began to hammer all over the park and brought up his maiden IPL century as RR went past the 200-run mark. After a 42-run stand with Riyan Parag, Buttler was dismissed for 124 as he played onto the stumps off pacer Sandeep Sharma in 19th. However, RR managed to finish on a massive total of 220/3, leaving SRH with a battle to fight for.

For SRH, six bowlers tried their hands at the RR batsmen, with three earning success. Meanwhile, Rashid was the most economical of all.

As SRH came out for the chase, it was indeed under stiff pressure right from the start. Although the openers Manish Pandey and Jonny Bairstow contributed to a 57-run stand, it was in the seventh over when the former fell for 31 after being knocked over by pacer Mustafizur Rahman.

Meanwhile, following the dismissal of Pandey, there was a lack of acute partnerships. 23 runs later, his partner too departed for 30 to spinner Rahul Tewatia in the eighth over.

By the score of 127, three more men were dismissed, with the likes of Shankar (8), Williamson (20) and Nabi (17) walking back within the 15th over. Meanwhile, 15 runs later, in the 17th over, pacer Chris Morris got rid of Abdul Samad (10) and Kedar Jadhav (19). While Rashid Khan followed in the following over from Mustafizur for an unfortunate duck, just a run later, Bhuveshwar and Sandeep managed to bat out until the end, while RR won big by 55 runs.

As for RR, just five bowlers were utilised. While Mustafizur and Morris were successful, the former was also the most economical of the lot.
Brief scores: RR 220/3 (Buttler- 124, Samson- 48; Rashid- 1/24) defeats SRH 165/8 (Pandey-31, Bairstow- 30; Mustafizur- 3/20, Morris- 3/29) by 55 runs.
