Indian wicketkeeper-opening batsman KL Rahul, who also leads Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League, has undergone successful surgery for appendicitis. He was diagnosed with the same on Saturday after complaining of severe abdominal pain.

According to ESPNCricinfo, Rahul flew to Mumbai in a charter flight and underwent laparoscopic appendectomy. The doctors have advised Rahul to rest for a week, following which he could resume his cricketing training and activities.

The surgery meant Rahul had to exit the PBKS team bubble. Therefore, he is likely to undergo a quarantine again before re-joining the PBKS bubble. Meanwhile, the PBKS management will consult with the IPL management to determine his exact quarantine period. Also, judging by the current situation, with a couple of team bubbles being breached with COVID, the IPL Governing Council is unlikely to be complacent in this case.

Rahul is currently the top run-scorer for PBKS, having scored 331 runs in seven innings at an average of 66.20 and a strike rate of 136.21, including four half-centuries. Meanwhile, PBKS promoted opener Mayank Agarwal as the stand-in skipper for its game against Delhi Capitals on Sunday, which PBKS lost by seven wickets.
