India vs Sri Lanka 2021: Lanka fined for maintaining slow over-rate during 2nd ODI defeat

India is currently up against Sri Lanka in a three-match One-Day International series at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. India bravely won the 2nd ODI. While Lanka lost it, it also cost the side a fine for maintaining a slow over-rate.

Sri Lanka is battling India in the ongoing three-match One-Day International series at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The visitor currently has an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, while it bravely fought to win the second ODI on Tuesday.

Although Lanka lost the series along with the 2nd ODI, it did not end there for it. Later, the entire side was fined 20 per cent of the match fees by the International Cricket Council for maintaining a slow over-rate.

As per a report submitted to the ICC by match referee Ranjan Madugalle, the host happened to be an over short in its stipulated time. "In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time," said ICC in a statement.

"In addition, as per Article 16.12.2 of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League Playing Conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short. Consequently, Sri Lanka will lose one point from their points tally during the Super League," it added.

The current ODI series is a part of the 2020–23 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League, where Lanka is currently placed 12th in the table, with 12 points from 11 games. So far, it has lost a couple of points due to slow over-rate.
