ICC World Test Championship 2021-23: India to kick-off campaign against England

The ICC World Test Championship 2029-21 concluded this month, with New Zealand winning the final against India. Meanwhile, India would kick off the 2021-23 campaign during its upcoming five-Test series tour of England from August.

The much-anticipated ICC World Test Championship 2019-21 came to an end this month when New Zealand triumphed after defeating India in the final. The maiden edition of the event was a grand success, while the 2021-23 edition is all set to get underway from August.

The upcoming edition would be similar to what we saw in the previous edition, with nine top Test teams fighting it out, barring Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Ireland, reports ESPNCricinfo. Meanwhile, the competition would get underway with India taking on England in the five-Test series for the Pataudi Trophy, starting August 4.

Just like the last time, each team would play six series, three home and three away. As for India, its away series would consist of England (5), South Africa (3) and Bangladesh (2), while at home, it would take on New Zealand (2), Sri Lanka (3) and Australia (4).

Points system
As far as the points system is concerned, it would see a change. The teams would earn 12 points for each win, while four for a draw and six for a tie. The number of matches in a series would not result in greater points, as was the case in the previous edition, while the point percentage system would be given the first preference to determine the league table. Furthermore, a point would be deducted per over in case of a slow over-rate.

"Instead of each series being worth the same number of points, 120, irrespective of whether the series is played over two Tests or five Tests, the next cycle will see each match being worth the same number of points - a maximum of 12 per match. Teams will be ranked on the percentage of available points they won from the matches they have played. The aim was to try and simplify the points system and to allow teams to be meaningfully compared on the table at any point, though they may have played differing numbers of matches and series," said Geoff Allardice (ICC CEO).
