In what might come as a heartbreak for Indian cricketing fans, the estimable 2021 ICC World T20 is all set to be moved to the United Arab Emirates, with the tournament getting underway from October 17. While India has the hosting rights, the current COVID situation in the country has compelled the International Cricket Council to move the competition to the gulf, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India retaining the hosting rights.

According to ESPNCricinfo, the tournament would supposedly begin just a couple of days following the Indian Premier League 2021 final, to be played in UAE, on October 15. The IPL 2021 remainder is likely to be played in the gulf from September 19.

The official confirmation of the same is awaited from ICC, as the BCCI has yet to write to it officially. However, preparations for the same are already underway. A few of the initial 12 Round 1 matches would be played in Oman to give ample time for the UAE pitches to invigorate.

Round 1 is to consist of a couple of group of four teams each, while the top two teams from each would qualify for the Super 12s, where two teams of six each would feature in. The teams playing in the Round 1 would be Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Namibia, Oman, Papua New Guinea. The Super 12s would consist of the top-ranked eight teams.

As for the venues, UAE will have three venues: Dubai International Stadium, Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium (Abu Dhabi) and Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Meanwhile, in Oman, the only venue in the country happens to be the Al Amerat Cricket Stadium (Muscat). While the final will be played on November 14, Dubai would be the venue to host it. However, it is unclear whether the matches would be held behind closed doors or with a limited capacity crowd.
